Having worked for either years as a well known presenter at a Chinese radio station, Xinran received countless letters from women about their own personal lives. Her book is an exploration of the truths about Chinese women's lives, presenting their terrible suffering, experiences of lengthy sexual abuse during the Cultural Revolution, their misery stemming from their wretched poverty made even more painful in a male-centered society, and the loss of children due to both man and natural disasters.

Very shocking, but a must read! I had trouble putting down the book to go to sleep or get up from bed to catch the tube to work. I enjoyed the many personal accounts of the Chinese women in this book. Xinran lets the reader get to know them quite well, even if we only get to hear a small part of their respective life stories. A gem.
