This is a classic tale that has changed over the centuries. The cover has a picture which seems to advertise the movie of the same name. Don’t worry, it is not a movie script. It is actually a little more of a studious investigation of the evolution of the folk tale. Students of English Literature or of theater might like to study this book.
Several versions of the story are discussed in this book. The full story that is told here is the one that the movie was based upon. That story was “The String of Pearls – A Romance”. It was a version of the story which was published in serial form in a London publication in the 1840’s. It was not the original and I am personally convinced that no one really knows the form of the original story. Even though it was not mentioned in this book, I have heard some indications that the story in its earlier forms was set, not in London, but in Edinburgh. Both cities have a long held reputation for tales of vicious crimes.
