This is my Desert Island Discs book. Once in a blue moon you find a book that captures your imagination and never lets go - I know it's usually one of the classics of literature but this is right up there.
So what's it about? Superficially: a mediaeval female mercenary captain. Ever wanted to know what all the bits on a suit of armour are called? Step right up.
But this huge, sprawling read is also about quantum physics, human relations, choas theory, sex, violence, history, the space/time contiuum....... lots of stuff.

Oh look - I can't describe it even half as well as it deserves - read it. Love it. If you don't then I don't think we are going to be friends.

Mary Gentle deserves a Nobel prize for literature.
