From prostitute to governess to duchess! A Cinderella story of a kind, with some pretty dark and shocking passages, intricate but loveable characters, and a truly touching story. Mary Balogh is different from other historical romance writers because of the depth she carries her stories. Superficiality is not for her! She doesn't hesitate to explore the darker side of Regency England, its social ills, as well as the Napleonic war on the continent (often ignored by other writers) and the psychological and emotional scars this leaves on her heroes. I find this inner conflict so much more fascinating than the external one (this murder set up was a bit annoying). Yet it's always a joy to read Balogh's novels. This one is my favorite of hers so far! I hope it finds a good reader ;-)
