A nameless priest is on the run in Mexico from the state authorities, who are clamping down on religion.

I didn't really like this. I'm not religious, its themes didn't appeal and at times I found it a little heavy handed on the "religion good, Socialism bad". My favourite bit was towards the end when the priest and the lieutenant are debating, which was more even handed and an interesting discussion on the role of the church in poor Latin American countries. Although I understand Greene actually visited Mexico in the late 30s to report on religious persecution, I found it slightly incredible that the authorities would put so much effort into catching one not particularly good priest.

And what exactly DID happen to Coral and why don't her parents seem to care much? So many threads of the story were left incomplete.

However, it is very well written and I found the flawed priest quite a sympathetic character.
