Middlesex is a novel by Jeffrey Eugenides. It was published in 2002 and won the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 2003.
The narrator and protagonist, Calliope Stephanides (later called "Cal"), an intersexed person of Greek descent, has 5-alpha-reductase deficiency. The bulk of the novel is devoted to telling his coming-of-age story growing up in Detroit, Michigan in the late 20th century. This story, however, is intertwined with elements of a family saga, meditations on the era's zeitgeist and bits of contemporary history.
(Wikipedia)

A brilliant, epic novel about gender identity, migration, coming-of-age.

7.11.2009 This book arrived by mail as a Holiday Gift Giving present yesterday. Thank you for fulfilling my wish, ApoloniaX!

18.8.2011 I just finished reading the book. It was certainly something I've never read before and also one of the best books I've read this year. I can easily see why this book is one of the 1001 Books You Must Read Before You Die. I loved the family saga side of the book telling about three generations of Greek-American immigrants, not only because it gave an interesting background for Callie's/Cal's story. But the main thing in the books is Callie, later Cal. I feel that I can't even find the words to describe my feelings after reading the book. It was so well written; imaginative, bold and yet sensitive. Despite the difficulties Callie had to go through to become Cal in the end, it seems that things turned out well for him.

Oh dear, I am a horribly ungrateful, lazy bookcrosser - thank you for this rabck which I received many, many months ago! I was just about to head off on a long work trip and was bemoaning the lack of a good book to take when this dropped through the door and went immediately into my bag. Perfect timing :o)

I'm not sure what I made of it, I wanted to like it but also found it quite hard going at times. There were bits when I was immersed in the story and others where I was trying to figure out how it linked up. I'm very glad to have read it.
