Olive Kitteridge: Fiction
8 journalers for this copy...
I loved this book about Olive Kitteridge. Told in 13 short stories, Olive makes an appearance in almost every one, and we get to see a different facet of her personality in each story.
The author's prose is lyrical at time, such as when she says, "Whenever she saw him, it was like moving into a warm pocket of air." Or, when the lounge piano player tells her motehr, "My hands are hungry."
Since I found this to be a very enjoyable book,I decided to start a bookray with it. Please send a private message to the next person on the list when it arrives and journal it when you send it to let us know it is still travelling safely. Ideally if it could be read and moved on within 4 weeks that would be great....especially for the people further down the list. Any problems please pm valpete. Thank you and enjoy the book

I can't put this book down!
Such powerful, compelling, human stories - connected by a complex, interesting woman.
I usually don't warm up to short stories, but this one is a novel composed of 13 stories.
Wonderful, disturbing, quirky, right-on/familiar emotions.
Sending on to dvg as soon as I finish in the next couple days.
Thanks again for sharing this new-to-me, amazing book, valpete!

Now I'm wishing I had jotted down some of the bits of wisdom in this book!
Here are 2 I liked:
- of a long-time-married couple (like us at 45 years!) "They had fun together these days, they really did. It was as if marriage had been a long, complicated meal, and now there was this lovely dessert."
- and a reminder to savor normal, healthy days: "...it was because she had not known what one should know: that day after day was unconsciously squandered."
Mailing to dvg tomorrow.

Arrived safely today and I am very excited to read this book. I enjoy Elizabeth Strout and am so happy that valpete included me in this ray! Thank you!
I am smack in the middle of another bookring but should have this read and moving by the middle of the week. (I read fast!)
Thank you JDT for the bookmark you included. Since I loved the poem, I will keep this one and place another in the book for Trekwoman.

I want to start of saying that I am typically not a short story person. Its not something I pick up ordinarily to read but this was unusual.
I think it took me a few chapters to realize it was written in little life episodes. Once I realized that, I was able to enjoy and fully comprehend the story of Olive Kitteridge's life in her small town. The story is filled with enjoyable characters and some life lessons picked up along the way for the reader as well as the characters. I do not want to give away the story but will say that I enjoyed reading about Olive and Henry, about Olive's quirkiness and that she was able to finally able to reconnect with an important family member in her life [nuff said]. The story ended with a nice little reminder of how life becomes sweet again after adversity.
I recommend reading the reader's guide at the end. Made me chuckle! Olive!
Sending to Trekwoman this afternoon. Enjoy!

Despite the good reviews from previous readers, I really couldn't get into this book. I forced myself to read the first four stories and felt each one was depressing and tiresome. Do these folks ever cheer up?
Will have this off in tomorrow's mail.

Thank you for sending this, I look forward to reading it and will pass it along when I am done.
Through the angry and unpleasant personality of Olive Kittridge and the juxtaposition of the beauty of the natural world and the follies and sorrows of human beings we are meant to understand the amazing gift of life. The book is written in 13 stories, some from Olive Kittridge's viewpoint and some from other people in the town where Olive lives. In the reader's guide the author says, "I chose this form primarily because I envisioned the power of Olive's character as best told in an episodic manner. I thought the reader might need a little break from her at times, as well." As a reader I think this is very true. I needed a break from Olive, if this book had been straight Olive I would have liked it a lot less.
Winners of the Pulitzer Prize are often depressing, with signficance that is supposed to be uplifting and this one is no exception.

Sorry it took me so ling to read this!
Sometimes I warmed to Olive, sometimes I really didn't like her, sometimes I thought I could see elements of myself in her, sometimes I fervently hoped that I would never be anything like her. I did, however, wonder about the many different situations going on in the lives around us without us suspecting a thing. Is there really so much suicide and suicidal thought going on? I was pleased that the book ended on a happier note, I felt that Olive deserved it for all her faults!

Olive Kitteridge made it to Taiwan. I have been wanting to read this for awhile.
I had just finished this book and have mixed emotions about it. I wasn't sure weather I was suppose to like or hate Olive. When I first started this book I found it depressing (started a happier book to read a long with this one) but thankfully I got past it. I liked to read the relationship between Olive and Chris. Olive and Chris even though they lived in the same house they both had different perspectives of what happened. There are a lot of underlying themes in this book that made me can't wait to read the next story.
