A surprise without warning! Thank you, Nadezda.

After my previous 1001-books that were more or less challenging "modern classics" from the 1960's, I could relax. This novel from 1993 is conventionally structured, no need for excessive thinking, you can just read on.

A startling and somewhat ominous beginning was followed by everyday descriptions, intelligent but sometimes unnecessary detailed. But maybe it was appropriate to emphasize that this is everyday life and pathological liars exist. There was then one here, and if you think your friends were unreliable and your intimate relations catastrophic, just read this book!
Margaret Atwood is still a little cynical. A good starting point, for me, is to trust other people, so I do not blame Tony, Roz or Charis.
Sure Atwood has her feminism again - even a bit over-emphasized.

Interesting, smart, funny, and even thrilling though.
