This is a story set on an alternate Earth (where English speakers render the year as seventeen-twelvety instead of 1802) where a teenage girl named Artemisia bangs her head in a fall at a prissy school for girls, and suddenly remembers her mother -- who was apparently a pirate! "Art" runs away from the school her straitlaced father placed her in to seek out her mother's crew and gets into all kinds of unexpected situations.
While I preferred Tanith Lee's more science-fiction/fantasy works, this one has some really funny bits and quite a lot of adventure for those who enjoy that kind of thing.
