This book contains over 200 fables. It was a book to dip into. One of my favourite fables is below:

THE TREES AND THE AXE

A woodsman went into the forest and petitioned the trees to provide him a handel for his axe. It seemed a modest request that the principal trees granted it right away, and they declared the the plain homely ash whould furnish what he needed. No sooner had the woodsman fitted this staff for his purpose, however, than he began chopping down the noblest trees in the woods. By the time the oak grasped the entire matter, it was too late, and he whispereed to a neighbouring ceder, "With out first concession we lost everything. If we has not sacrificed out humble neighbour, we might still be able to stand for ages."

When the rich surrender the rights of the poor, they provided a handle to be used against their own privileges.

I am going to leave this outside the Court House in The Avenue. Maybe someone who has been to court today will find the words of wisdom useful!
