Left by a patron at the one of the local spots that has a BookCrossing bookshelf, so I am registering it for them and returning it to wander the world as a BookCrossing book. I have not read this book.
Interesting book, written for the YA crowd. What makes a person pretty, or ugly, and what does our world value? I'd heard about the series(yes, it is a series, originally intended to be a trilogy, I think, but now at least 4 books.) Basic premise is that everyone has a compulsory "operation" at age 16 (before which, they are part of the "Uglies" group) to become uniformly "pretty" aka one of the Pretties. But our heroine Tally takes a slightly different path. After her friend Shay runs away before the operation, headed to a outpost of escaped Uglies living in the wilderness, Tally, too heads to the possibly mythical and elusive "Smoke". Only life is even more complicated for Tally, because she has been coerced by the authorities to help them seek out the Smoke and reclaim all the run-aways there. But Tally finds life in The Smoke somewhat richer and more than she expected, and begins to wonder if being a Pretty is all it's cracked up to be.
Nice views of the defunct civilization that preceded this, the Rusties, which gives Westerfeld's take on what we're gonna come to if we don't shape up and stop being so dependent on oil. A little teen angst, and teen love, some survival lore, and ethical questions come up. A nice blend for teens of our time to take in, especially with our current emphasis on what passes for beauty.
