Written in Bryson's lightly serious style, this little book tells us about all there is to know about Shakespeare. In other words, not much is really known. Books that purport to offer more are making assumptions.
Thus we know where Shakespeare lived for some parts of his life, what work he did, what he owned. We know his work was popular, and we know that he often did not do much geographical research - got things wrong - and sometimes simply made no sense. Even with all this he still remains heads and shoulders above others in what he brought to the language and the art of playwriting.
It's fun to read and informative.
