I was in Ottawa last week, visiting my mother-in-law. Her condo has a 'library' where people are free to take or leave books as they choose. I took this 2001 paperback along with a couple of others.
I wasn't really entranced with this book. The main character is a twelve year old criminal genius, and I found little to recommend him. And his opposite number, Holly, is rather scatter brained, and I had a hard time liking her either.
Artemis Fowl, a twelve year old criminal genius, manages to get a hold of The Book by which all of Fairyland lives. Knowing all their secrets he devises a plan to kidnap a fairy and hold her for a ransom of fairy gold. He kidnaps Captain Holly Short of the LEPrecon unit, and now he must hold off all the forces her people can bear so he can get the gold.
I can see this being a fun read for a teenager, but it's not for me. I doubt I shall be reading the sequels.
