'On the hottest day of the summer of 1934, thirteen-year-old Briony Tallis sees her sister Cecilia strip off her clothes and plunge into the fountain in the garden of their country house. Watching her is Robbie Turner, her childhood friend who, like Cecilia, has recently come down from Cambridge.

By the end of that day the lives of all three will have been changed for ever. Robbie and Cecilia will have crossed a boundary they had not even imagined at its start, and will have become victims of the younger girls imagination. Briony will have witnessed mysteries, and committed a crime for which she will spend the rest of her life trying to atone.'

I bought this book for Jozebedee to help restart a broken Bookray so I hope you all enjoy it xx

Journal Entry 7 by wingBookworm-ladywing from Madrid, Madrid Spain on Monday, January 4, 2010
Such a beautiful book, I am giving it a 10!
I really liked it; besides being beautifully written, it has a very unusual twist of plot (I won't give it away), so what begins as a regular novel becomes something entirely different.
A misunderstanding can change many lives in different ones...
I loved all characters, particularly the female ones, so well depicted and credible.

A quotation:
"She (a thirteen-year old Bryony, a writer-to-be) need not judge. There did not have to be a moral. She need only show separate minds, as alive as her own, struggling with the idea that other minds were equally alive. It wasn't only wickedness and scheming that made people unhappy, it was confusion and misunderstanding, above all, it was the failure to grasp the simple truth that other people are as real as you. And only in a story could you enter these different minds and show how they had an equal value. That was the only moral a story need have."

Thanks for sharing this one with us, Jozebedee, and thanks for helping out, Danielle23; I have Marcenda's address, and it will continue its way towards Portugal.
By the way, the film based on ths book is very, very good: See pic with Keira and "that" beautiful green dress... I recommend it.
Happy New Year 2010!

Journal Entry 10 by Marcenda from Carcavelos, Lisboa (distrito) Portugal on Wednesday, March 24, 2010
This book really moved me. The descriptions os places and people are so vivid I felt I knew all of them, loved some, hated some. And it has one of the best written (if not the best) sex scenes I've ever read. What a sad sad ending. This is the second Ewan book I read and I look forward to reading more. Since I'm the last in the bookray, I'll keep it for a while, possibly until I have the time to start a new bookray. Or maybe I'll find someone to Rabck it to, who knows? Thank you so very much for sharing it with me!

Thank you so much for sending me this book - it will go on my TBR pile for now. I will journal again once I have read it.

Journal Entry 13 by wingRomneywing at Semaphore, South Australia Australia on Friday, March 29, 2013
I finally got to this book from my ever growing TBR pile! I kept looking at it and thinking I wanted to wait until the "right" time to read it because I really wanted to enjoy it and not rush through it or read it when I was tired. So I found the time to read it all in one session and I did really enjoy this book!

It will be passed on soon.
