The story works it's way backwards from the present to the mid-20's and teens of the 2 main characters and swaps from one to the others recollections. The denoument is unexpected to say the least.

Very well constructed novel and well up to the usual high standards I have come to expect from Anita Shreve. This is a love story well worth reading.

Mum said she found it difficult to write a review that didn't give away the ending and I'd completely agree. Apparently though I should have read 'The Weight Of Water' first as that also features Thomas and the main plot of that book is mentioned in this one.
Anyway another cracking read from Anita Shreve (as I have read a few now) drawing you into relationships that are realistically written, full of imperfections rather than rose tinted.
