The Wednesday Letters

Picked this up at the annual Brantford Symphony Orchestra booksale.
Content warning — this story includes references to a rape
Saccharine with flat and stereotyped characters. Here is what I liked — the idea of a husband writing his wife a letter every week, and their adult children learning about their parents through these letters. Here’s what I didn’t like — everything else. Poor writing, moralistic tone, blasé characters, predictable plot — right up to the big reveal. I was engaged enough to overlook all that — including the sanctimonious preaching — right up until I learned that one of the pastors was the rapist — that the guy who had raped the mother and fathered one of the now-adult children was now THEIR PASTOR!! I threw the book across the room in disgust. It’s one thing to suggest that forgiveness is something that is good and helpful to healing. The audacity to suggest that a woman should not only forgive her rapist but forget it happened and have the man who RAPED her be a visible and respected community member — a spiritual advisor no less! — that she would see regularly. Just NO!!! Women — even saintly ones who find it in their hearts to forgive rapists — should not have to see that rapist in their communities. Ridiculous and outrageous and so out-of-touch.
