Annette runs away from finishing school to enter the school of life. As a result she meets a diverse group of characters, all of whom are trying to break free from their own particular obsessions.
Read as part of the Murdoch-a-month project. A small group of us are reading Murdoch's output in order of publication. It's fascinating to watch her development as an author.
This was her second book to be published, although it is thought to have been written first. Many of the themes which run through all her novels are clearly signposted here. This is a lighthearted and funny book; they get much darker and more complicated as the years go on.
