Tiny elemental creatures called kigh grant favors to bards who sing their requests. The king's younger sister has renounced her family to become a bard and practice this art. Meanwhile, the Duc of Ohrid's aunt schemes to have the king executed as a traitor. Cemendia, a neighboring country, executes anyone suspected of "singing the kigh;" and it is from Cemendia that the aunt plots to overpower the king and usurp his kingdom of Shkoder.

I've just gotten to the bit where things get interesting. I've never read Tanya Huff before, but she sucked me right in!
I love this book. The characters are realistically loveable. The world Huff has created is beautiful and marred at the same time. If you like fantasy this it a great read.
