It's DS Logan McRae's first day back on the job after a year off on the sick, and it couldn't get much worse. Four-year-old David Reid's body is discovered in a ditch, strangled, mutilated and a long time dead. There's a killer stalking the Granite City and the local media are baying for blood.

If that wasn't enough, Logan also has to contend with a new boss, DI Insch, who doesn't suffer fools gladly and thinks everyone's a fool, and his own ex-girlfriend, the beautiful but chilly Isobel MacAlister, who also happens to be the chief pathologist. The only good news is WPC 'Ball Breaker' Watson, Logan's new guardian angel. The dead are piling up in the morgue almost as fast as the snow on the streets, and Logan knows time is running out. More children are going missing. More are going to die. If Logan isn't careful, he's going to end up joining them...

After really enjoying "Flesh House" I had high hope of being just as gripped again with this, MacBride's debut novel & I certainly wasn't disappointed. Once again it's gory, thrilling....& quite funny in parts (well I thought so anyhow!). I have a couple of others waiting to be read on my TBR mountain - somehow I don't think they'll be there long :o)

Phew, this one wore me out, there's tons going on in it!
I think to appreciate this you need time to read lots of it at a time and have a good memory! There was rather too much going on for me - I like everything in a book to be there for a reason, and while in real life very few events are connected a novel needs some cohesion. . .
. . . that said: Mr Macbride is a faultless writer and easy to read : his is my favourite form of narrative in that he tells the story, and doesn't use too much speech to move it along.
Never fancied his books before, but will definitely look out for more in the future.
