Nightjohn
1 journaler for this copy...
Sarny is a young slave girl, and Nightjohn, who once escaped to the north, has returned to teach others to read. Will Sarny take a chance to learn something so dangerous?
I suspect that even in the "best" situations, slavery was never a good thing for the slaves. But the plantation where Sarny lives is not a good place, or even close to it. This is a grim portrayal of what it was like to be a slave, and unfortunately probably close to the reality that many, many people had to endure.
Even so, I don't believe in challenging books because they expose unpleasant truths. But of course, not everyone agrees with me, or we wouldn't have things like banned books week.
Here's another copy on my shelf.
