Rebecca Himleys father is a weaver and her mother a bobbin winder. Times are hard for the Kidderminster weavers in the first decades of the nineteenth century. If William is late with his piece then it will be refused and that means a week living on his wife wages a week of potatoes and little else, a week of gnawing hunger. Then Fanny thinks of the time when she had been in service, she might have had to work hard, but at least she had been well fed. she desperately wants her two daughters to go into service, too. William is proud and fiercely independent, and will have non of it. Then Bessie, Rebeccas vivacious sister is brutally rapted and after a tragic accident, flees with her brother Tom to London. The Himleys never recover from the incident, but at least William now agrees to allow REbecca to go into service to the house of the local carpet manufacturer, Jeremiah Pagnel.

Francis Pagnel is the adopted son of Jeremiash brother. His fascination with weaving and carpet design leads him in the family carpet business. While learning the trade, he moves into Jeremiahs house, much to the disgust of Vivian, the son of Jeremiahs wife by a previous marriage, and Jermiahs heir, who guards his inheritance jealously.

Francis is drawn to the shy beautiful housemaid Rebecca and teh two of them fall in love. Rebecca becomes pregnant, which is discovered while Francis is away for many months on business. she is gturned out of the house, penniless and with nowhere to go...
