The Yesterday's Rose Thrift Shop in Fairfax, VA holds a sale one Sunday a month on their stock of books. They sell all that you can pack into a brown paper grocery bag for $5. I wasn't sure that I would make it to the sale today but I did get the chance to wander over to the thrift store for some book bargains. I am very happy with some of the books that I got for Mt. TBR and I have many to add to my release stash as well. Some upcoming events have me stocking up on the books and I enjoy every minute of it.

From the back cover:

John Saul, author of nineteen bestselling novels of chilling suspense, has now created a serial thriller that brings to life the small New England town of Blackstone - where the terrifying sins of the past threaten the innocent and guilty alike. Evil is alive in Blackstone and offering itself in the form of neatly wrapped gifts that appear on the doorsteps of Blackstone's leading families.

Each gift bears a chilling history.

Each brings a mysterious power to harm.

Each reveals another thread in the masterfully woven web of ...

THE BlACKSTONE CHRONICLES

Part 4

While researching an historical piece on the Asylum for the town's newspaper, editor Oliver Metcalf digs through the attic that once belonged to his father, the last superintendent of the facility. There among the dusty medical records, Oliver discovers a beautifully embroidered linen handkerchief with an ornate "R" in one corner. He decides it will make a lovely present for Rebecca Morrison, who recently suffered a horrifying family tragedy. But is this token of affection the innocent object it seems? What teats were once dried with Rebecca's handkerchief - and how many more will begin to flow?

I love having the entire set of books and so I read these one after another. John Saul is one of my favorite authors for the times that I need something a little creepy or sinister. These thrillers certainly fit the bill for that. Each short little book is unique story but the in no way stand alone. They should be read in order and I am glad that I got to read them long after the publication when I could read them one after the other without having a long break in between.

Here are links to the other books in the series so that my comments about each of the books can be shared in one place.

An Eye for an Eye: The Doll - Part 1

Twist of Fate: The Locket - Part 2

Ashes to Ashes: The Dragon's Flame - Part 3

In the Shadow of Evil: The Handkerchief - Part 4

Day of Reckoning: The Stereoscope - Part 5

Asylum - Part 6

Here are my comments on this book only:

From the very beginning it was known that Rebecca would get this handkerchief and that something bad would happen to her. I just hated that she had to go through more tragedy in her life as so much has happened already.

I must say that the ties that bind together the handkerchief and the family are getting more extraordinary as the books progress. It was incredibly creepy that a little scrap of cloth could invoke images that are very vivid and terrifying. I must say that I never thought the death would occur in such a way and it must have been agonizing.
