3 for £5 a great remainder's shop find - from my wishlist :)
(30/03/09) *Slight spoiler* McGregor does write very well, a unique poetic and emotional style, although it does tend to drag a bit. This book interweaves the lives of David and Eleanor, brought together as randomly as these things can occur in books, and stay together through to the end (of the book) with a quite touching scene built around the permanence of physical love and affection. However, the main plot concerns David Carter...or is he(?)...tracing his family tree and coming across a number of the possible 'beginnings'. He is an inveterate collector of things - artefacts - and a museum curator by profession, so the family histories are written in the clever context of the, 'physical traces of history', chapters named after inconsequential hand-written notes, library cards, tobacco tins, anything which can be infused with a sense of time and place. Also, a brief appearance by the internet, although oddly leading to some misinformation! 'The idea that all information would eventually exist in this cacophonous airborne form astonished and alarmed him. It was overwhelming, unknowable, uncategorisable.'
