It's a new month... time for some new bug fixes!
While Matt is still working on harnessing the book data that we all have contributed to, and making it available for searches, he's also been rather busy fixing other things, and even adding some nifty little features. Read all about it in this Announcements forum post.

This is a beautiful story of family continuity and connectedness, of Newfoundland outport life, the mystery of life, love and is truly an enchanting, poetic read! The author makes the premise of finding a baby in a cradle on an iceberg off Newfoundland a couple of days after the sinking of the Titanic seem entirely plausible, and it is a lovely mysterious way to open the story.
I was sorry to have it end and will re-read someday.
This book is about to be sent out on a book ring . Will post the names once they are all in.

Came in the mail today, should finish it over the weekend, and then off it goes to...? Have to check on that.

Update, 5/09/03. Finished the book, not sure I was satified with it. It was difficult for me to connect to any of the characters. I'll be sending it on to drbrown, actually, since that's the only other US person on the ring, and it seems kind of silly to send it back to Canada only to have somebody send it right back here. Will go in mail as soon as I have a postal address.

Ooops! Forgot to mail this out, so it finally went today, though I probably could have walked it to DrBrown's place faster, right down the 210 freeway. (Never fear, I bought a huge calendar and a notebook to keep track of all my bookrings so this lag won't happen again if my computer gets hungry and eats PMs again.)

This arrived yesterday in the mail. Thanks, caffeinchic!

Just finished reading this in a marathon session... without spoiling the book, let's just say that the Mir exploration of the Titanic is part of the story, which is odd as I just saw the IMAX film made at that dive. Another weird connection is that the main character is a year older than my grandmother and her grand-daughter is five months older than me. So I felt constantly like I was reading about a fictionalized Canadian version of my own family. A very interesting experience. Now this book goes on to justabookhound!

in the mail and on its way to justabookhound. Enjoy!

Just received this book from dr brown and somehow managed to open the side of the enveloppe and rain little bits of paper fluff all over myself. I'm pretending it's snow and that makes me all the more anxious to read this chilly book!

thanks,

jen

I enjoyed this book. I loved the Newfoundland setting and while I did not find the various storylines terribly original, as a whole it was a satisfying read. I think I liked some of the connections between generations that weren't played up more than I liked those that were really stressed. For example, the author made use of many ice metaphors and also of lines of longitude and lattitude connecting and seperating people from each other and their ancestors. I didn't enjoy this as much as I liked realizing that in each of the generations the women had to work at hard physical labour and in rough conditions during their pregnancies and the early years of their children's lives. That doesn't seem to change over the years, what does is whether each woman has made this choice or had it forced upon her. I also liked the observations about walking in the same footsteps (or not) of your parents and grandparents as a result of migration.

Got this in the mail a while ago, and totally forgot to journal it. Started reading, will hopefully finish it by the weekend.

I loved this book. The author's depiction of the life of a strange Newfoundland family (what Newfoundland family isn't strange?) was touching, and very vivid. While the story seemed a little far-fetched at times, and a little predictable at others, I found myself glued to this book until I finished it. This is a book that I'd definitely keep around on my shelf if I didn't have to send it off to the next person on the list. I'd read it again, if only because I'm not sure I picked up all of the author's subtleties the first time around. I'll be watching for it in used bookstores, that's for sure.

I apologize for my lateness in sending this on - stress and my own stupidity in misplacing this (and other) books has caused me to fall behind far more than I'd hoped. It's in the mail!

This is a beautifully written book that places the reader in Newfoundland with a wonderful cast of characters. Science, history and a rather unique mystery make this book a wonderful read.

This book was sent to me by a friend ~

I enjoyed reading it very much. It's a different sort of story but kept my interest right through.
I particuarly liked the reference to The Titanic - especially as I know the great-nephew of the Captain of the Titanic !

After rereading this book and enjoying it a second time, I've passed it on to a friend who stopped by today. So rather than have it languish on my bookshelf it begins another journey with an adventuring woman.
