In "Parallel Universes," Fred Alan Wolf, using quantum physics as his jumping off
point, discusses the scientific possibility of parallel universes. Quantum Indeterminacy, which argues that when one attempts to measure subatomic
aspects of reality, the observer of the "experiment" affects the result produced
by the experiment, was first described by Werner Heisenberg. Quantum Physicists
were then left with the problem of dealing with this theory and data. One of the
interpretations of the data is the parallel universe theory--that in fact we co-exist
in different parallel universes which coexist next to each other and possibly even
overlap in some way and to some extent. This notion of multidimensional reality
or multiple universes can be described metaphorically this way: Imagine the planet
earth out in space, and then imagine that there is a multidimensional lo"loaf of
sliced wonder bread" which goes around the earth like one of the rings of Saturn.
Imagine that at 8:00 a.m. on Monday morning "you" are on planet or "playnet"
earth. The cosmic "higher self" you pulls out one slice of the "wonder bread" and
in that slice finds him or herself pulling out a gray coffee mug at exactly 8:00 a.m.
Your cosmic "higher self" puts that slice back and then pulls out a slice of wonder
bread immediately next to it. Now in this parallel universe everything is the same
relative to you in the kitchen, except that you are pulling out an orange coffee mug.
The statistical divergences between adjacent "wonder bread slices" is relatively
small and therefore so are the "physical" divergences. Say, however, that your
cosmic "higher self" pulls out a slice of wonder bread 25 slices away. In this reality
frame or parallel universe perhaps you are still in bed and are calling in sick because
you have a cold. Perhaps then it is possible to "shift" between reality frames if one
has developed a mind which can access the quantum level of reality. Fred Alan
Wolf's book is an excellent starting point for exploring the possibilities.
