The Red Tent: A Novel
1 journaler for this copy...
A really neat twist on a Biblical story, this novel delves into the story of Dinah, chronicalling her life as told by her.
Not being very religious I wasn't too familiar with the story of Jacob and his sons (aside from my elementary school field trip to watch "Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat" in Toronto), so I found this novel to be a nice introduction to biblical stories.
Of course, this novel is a work of fiction as the author states, but it's nice to see a story with a strong female lead and loosely based on a biblical story.
The novel starts out with Dinah narrating the events leading up to her birth, with the births of her brothers and describing her mothers and brothers in detail, she talks about the "Red Tent" and about the miscarriages that some of her mothers were faced with.
The story then delves into Dinah's birth, her childhood, her welcome into the "Red Tent", her marriage (this is where the story apparently differs from the bible. I won't ruin the story for you) and what happens after her husband and his villagers are brutally murdered. Her story doesn't end there, although I believe in the bible it states that she was killed when her husband was murdered, but I may be wrong.
We're taken through the story until she is an elderly woman, where once again the story gets quite good with a new twist (Again, I won't ruin it for you!) and at the end of the novel she is on her death bed, contented for the most part with how she had led her life. It left me with a satisfied feeling at the end. It was wonderfully written.
All in all I loved this book and have lent it out to family and friends who all share the same sentiments. I hope the next reader enjoys it as much as I did!
