The Glass Castle by Jeanette Walls is a great story. In the story the author, Jeanette, recalls her childhood in which she was raised in a very nomadic lifestyle. Her family’s constant moving around was caused by her father getting drunk, losing his jobs, and eventually they had to skip town because of their inability to pay taxes. Jeanette’s parents throughout the story tried to make sure that their children learned from their mistakes. However her parents never tried to do this themselves. For time and time again her parents made the same mistake of not paying their taxes and losing their jobs and this led to them having to pack up in the middle of the night and skip town when no one would notice. In the book this was referred to this as, “doing the skedaddle.” Although her parents broke the law and got into a lot of trouble they did teach their daughter one very important lesson that she would reflect back on later in her life. That lesson is that you do not need to have a lot of money and fancy things to be happy; all you need are the clothes on your back and a family to support you.
This is a great story and sends a great message to all who read it. I thought that there were quite a few unnecessary descriptions in the story that made the book boring and pretty hard to follow. There also were many things that were repetitive. But all and all this was a great story and is a must read for anyone who likes a story about someone who faces adversity and comes out on top in the end.
