This Insp. Lynley novel really surprised me. There was so much drama that I found myself drawn away from the "mystery" and into the characters more. Normally there is a nice balance.

I found myself not liking this one as much as her others because of the whole relationship with Lynley and Havers. In fact, I kept thinking, "Lynley, you arrogant ass!" But this book is in the wake of DECEPTION ON HIS MIND (my favorite so far) which made me become a Havers fan. So weaving her "disloyalty" from that book into this one made it a bit personal.

It is a good read, but Havers fans beware - you'll want to slap Lynley around! ;)

Thomas Lynley series: Book 10

Journal Entry 6 by i0xi0x at Youngstown, Ohio USA on Friday, August 16, 2013
This was one of my least favorites in this series for a couple reasons. First, the last book focused solely on Havers and I developed a loyalty to her in that one. It was my favorite of the series. So with her on the "outs" for this entire book, I was frustrated. Second, it seemed like the three detectives were all working at cross-purposes which made it seem like there were three different "mysteries" going on at the same time. Very disjointed and confusing. Finally, the copy of the book was missing a 66 page chunk. Not from wear and tear, but a misprint. It skipped from page 544 to page 609. I had to find the book elsewhere so I wouldn't miss anything! I'm interested to see where the series goes next for Lynley and Havers.

Calder Moor is a wild and deadly place: many have been trapped in the myriad limestone caves, lost in collapsed copper mines, injured on perilous gritstone ridges. But this time, when two bodies are discovered in the shadow of the ancient circle of stones known as Nine Sisters Henge, it is clearly not a case for Mountain Rescue. The corpses are those of a young man and woman. Each met death in a different fashion. Each died violently. To Detective Inspector Thomas Lynley, brought in to investigate by special request, this grisly crime promises to be one of the toughest assignments of his career. For the unfortunate Nicola Maiden was the daughter of a former officer in an elite undercover unit, a man Lynley once regarded as a mentor. Now, as Lynley struggles to find out if Nicola's killer was an enemy of her father's or one she earned herself, a disgraced Barbara Havers, determined to redeem herself in the eyes of her longtime partner, crisscrosses London seeking information on the second murder victim. Yet the more dark secrets Lynley and Havers uncover, the more they learn that neither the victims nor the suspects are who they appear to be. And once again they come up against the icy realization that human relationships are often murderous...and that the blood that binds can also kill.
