Henry VIII has proclaimed himself Supreme Head of the Church and the country is waking up to savage new laws, rigged trials and the greatest network of informers ever seen. Under the order of Thomas Cromwell, a team of commissioners is sent through the country to investigate the monasteries. There can only be one outcome: the monasteries are to be dissolved. But on the Sussex coast, at the monastery of Scarnsea, events have spiralled out of control. Cromwell's Commissioner Robin Singleton, has been found dead, his head severed from his body. His horrific murder is accompanied by equally sinister acts of sacrilege - a black cockerel sacrificed on the alter, and the disappearance of Scarnsea's Great Relic. Dr Matthew Shardlake, lawyer and long-time supporter of Reform, has been sent by Cromwell into this atmosphere of treachery and death. But Shardlake's investigation soon forces him to question everything he hears, and everything that he intrinsically believes ...
A really interesting read. A good murder mystery along with good historical information. WIll look out for more books by this author
Sending to Molekilby from the BCUK EXtra post-2000 VBB
Received today, thanks camis. I quite fancied the synopsis and from the review looks like it's right up my street.
I trod very carefully through the first 100 pages of this book in two minds on whether I was enjoying it. In any case by the end I was thoroughly hooked. Another historical book which has led me to looking at facts about the events surrounding the plot. This series of books has also been recommended by Nu-Knees. I have Book 2 waiting to be read next month and Book 3 lined up elsewhere. A great new find.

This was a good read. I couldn't help comparing it the "The Name of the Rose", which I found a lot more atmospheric. However, as a murder mystery and as historical fiction it stands up well. I was pleased to have solved some of what was going on :)) Now it's Meddyg's turn to try.
Recieved from tehuti.
Slow in parts, but a good read nonethless. Set in at the time of the Dissolution of the Monasteries. Set in a small seaside village (Scarnsey)it follows the adventures of a lawyer, sent to investigate the mysterious death of a previous commissioner whose decapitated body was found in the kitchen of the monastery.
Now read on to find out who dunnit!
To be released at the Cardiff OCBZ - The Wig and Pen at the monthly meeting.

Delighted to get this at the monthly meetup today. The next two are waiting in the wings! Thanks also to Nu-Knees for the recommendation.
Finished this a few days ago and I found it very enjoyable, I like this particular period in history, I had 'The Other Boleyn Girl' on my TBR shelf and decided to read that next because of the connection. This copy is pretty well thumbed now, I think from other comments noted on Book Group Online the physical quality of these books seems to be a problem. I hope it lasts a little longer. Two other readers waiting to read this copy, bookvole and miketroll, I'm not sure which of them will get it first.
CONTROLLED RELEASE NOTES:
Passed to bookvole then reserved for miketroll.
Passed to bookvole then reserved for miketroll.
Rollicking good read.
Back in my posession, ready to be passed on.
Picked up at last Cardiff meetup but one. Sorry about registering so late. :(
Miketroll was a much treasured Bookcrosser who sadly died in January 2015. His family have passed on his books to be released in his memory. Mike was passionate about books and thoroughly enjoyed spreading his love of reading by dispersing his books through the Bookcrossing community. Hopefully a little of that magic will continue to travel through your enjoyment of one of his books.
