Received safely yesterday, thanks, thursoexile. I'll add it to my ring pile :-)

Journal Entry 3 by WelshHelen from Ponthenri, Wales United Kingdom on Wednesday, January 9, 2008
I'm a big French fan, having read three or four of their previous books, but I found myself disappointed in this one. Nina (the mother) turns out to be a far better detective than the police themselves and single-handedly finds out what happens to her daughter (I'm desperately trying not to spoil the book!) Other characters are touched on but we never really get to know anyone else (and what was the point of the Renata character?!) and I found myself very disappointed with the baddie's actions and reasoning.

It was an easy and fast read but the ending needs both pruning and clarifying! This certainly hasn't put me off reading other French books but I certainly wouldn't recommend this to new French readers.

Thank you for sharing, thursoexile. I have Madmadge's address and once I'm over this flu bug, I'll get it in post to her.

What a lovely surprise, after a horrendous morning yesterday, to find a package on my doormat and to see another Nicci French book inside. Thank you so much Exile - I'll look forward to reading it when the dust has settled after our move on Thursday.

Unlike WelshHelen, I was gripped by this book. I could almost feel Nina's frustration and panic. I do agree however that some of the characters seemed a little unnecessary to the story.

The last few pages were particularly tense and I literally couldn't put the book down. I have yet to be disappointed by Nicci French books and can't wait to read the next one.

Am PMing Yorkshirelass to let her know I'm done with it and that it's her turn. Thank you once again thursoexile for sharing this book.

I started reading this on Saturday and finished it this morning despite a busy weekend.
You really can't help but read this quickly as it moves at such a pace and it just carries you along.
Like WelshHelen, I found the Nina character a bit unreal, a bit Wonderwomanish, but I enjoyed the book because of its pace.
I am a fan of Nicci French and although this was not her best it was far from her worst.
I have MissTerry's address and will be posting it tomorrow.

This was one of the most suspenseful mysteries I have read in a long time. It’s Nina’s birthday and she is getting ready to take her kids and her boyfriend to Florida for Christmas. While trying to get everything ready for the trip, a surprise birthday party occurs supposedly put together by her daughter, Charlie. When Charlie doesn’t show up for the party or for the departure of the trip, Nina becomes frantic with worry. The first thing she does is go to the police but they don’t believe Charlie is in danger. Just another teenager who is trying to make a statement with her parents by hiding out for a night. Nina doesn’t believe it so she takes it upon herself to try and find her daughter. As a mother, Nina’s gut feeling is, something is drastically wrong here. As a mother, the thought of a missing child can suck the life right out of you. I was pulling for Nina every step of the way.
This is a quick read and it keeps you on the edge of your seat right up until the end. Highly recommend.

I finished this in one day. It kept me interested and moved in a fast pace. Like others before me I felt like the characters were not as developed as they could have been, and some were irrelevant. However, I do think it was a good read and rated it so.

Released 15 yrs ago (7/4/2008 UTC) at Controlled Release in -- Mail or by hand-rings, RABCK, meetings, swap etc, Missouri USA

What an awesome surprise. Thank you! Funny how this came full circle back to me. I am so glad to have the chance to read it and not feel like I am holding anyone up. I was actually on the original ring for this but just couldn't get to it back then. Very cool! Thank you for thinking of me.
