From back cover:

The kids at Edward Rucher High School call Jinsen "Buddha Boy"--he wears oversize tie-dyed dragon T-shirts, shaves his head, and always seems to be smiling. He's clearly a freak. Then Justin is paired with him for a class project. All Justin wants to do is get it over with and go back to hanging out with his friends.... until he discovers Jinsen's incredible artistic talent. And the more he gets to know Jinsen, the more Justin questions his own beliefs. But being friends with Buddha Boy isn't simple, especially when Justin realizes he's going to have to take sides. What matters more: the high school social order or getting to know someone extraordinary?

This is a book for young adults. It's a very quick read (117 pages). Simple and yet very meaningful. I found this lovely little book to be like a breath of fresh air. This was the first book I've read by Kathe Koja and I liked it so well I would love to read more by her.

Oh to be different...
Because of my career and the fact that I have had teenagers in and out of my home for about 14 years now, I know the pain of the kid that has spent his day being picked on and the confusion of the kid that is not sure which "side" to choose. It was the same when I was in high school many years ago.
BUDDHA BOY was a joy for me to read. I enjoyed Koya's approach to the very real aspects of the typical high school with typical teenagers. A familiar subject written in a different and appealing voice.
Thanks, WingedMan for the opportunity to read this. I have discovered another author I probably would not have if it had not been for book crossing and the wonderful friends who offer up books for rings.
(will PM discoverylover for address)

Sending it on today :) I reread it yesterday and enjoyed it just as much the second time. Thanks WMan for setting up the ring!!! (apologies to Juli2007 for the amount of tape I used to wrap it up, I really didn't want it to get wet!)

Journal Entry 10 by discoverylover from Wellington City, Wellington Province New Zealand on Sunday, March 16, 2008
oops, I scrolled down and realised I haven't done a proper entry for it! So here goes :D

I really enjoyed it! Made me cry at least twice the first time I read it, which I <3! Will definitely be recommending it to others. I really liked the way it was written from a different perspective than books about high school are, it made it more interesting I think.

This was a lovely, easy read. I loved the "moral" of the book too, really bought memories of high school and peer pressure back!

This was a lovely little book with a strong message - a great book for teenage readers (I'm going to look for a copy to pass on to my niece).

I had never heard of Kathe Koja before, but I liked her style of writing and I'd like to read more by her. This is one of those books that leave you thinking long after you have finished reading. Always a sign of a good read : )

Arrived in this mornings post, very speedy delivery. Just arrived before I managed to start my next read, which is rather a long book; so this will fit in nicely with another small book that I also need to finish.
Lovely postcards JoolsW, I'll make sure two of them travel on with the book.

Read this last night, a wonderful book, I liked the way Koja managed to include different teenage characteristics through her small character list. She suceeded in conveying a lot in a short book. Thanks WingedMan for sharing this book.

Easily a ten-star book - one of the most unique I've ever read. Don't let its size fool you. This one really packs a punch. Koja's different, somewhat stream-of-consciousness writing style really enhances the book. Just goes to show how convention can be broken with style and class. Kudos to Kathe Koja for tackling such a sensitive subject - although the ending's not necessarily a pretty picture, it's very real and for someone who had a bad experience in school at that age, it really resonated.

Off to NMReader when I get an address!
