Amazon Review:
The Shadow of the Wind is a dark thrilling tale of love and loss set in the heart of post war fascist Spain. When Daniel's father takes him for the first time to the Cemetery of Lost Books in the heart of Barcelona, it sparks a chain of events that will pursue him through adolescence and ultimately set the course of his life. The book was simultaneously incredibly moving and darkly macabre at points; yet it captured the very essence of human suffering and compassion, especially in the author's portrayal of the climate of fear in fascist Spain. One recommendation: don't read it alone in a darkened house at night...

This is a gothic literary mystery and coming of age book set in Barcelona. The idea is really imaginative and the descriptions evocative but the eroticism and characters left me cold. I think it may be a book for young men. Worth reading though.

Yes a very imaginative story, and although it was dark in places, I found more humour than I was expecting. There are alot of male characters, and although their stories and desires are at the forefront of the story, I wouldn't go so far as to say it was a book for young men. The emotional content had such variety from the basic to the more poetic and much more refreshing than books more generally marketed to women.
