I picked this book up probably a year and a half ago now and I absolutely could not put it down. I read the book straight through which is a rare thing for me! Megan McCafferty is a wonderful author and I can't wait for the second installment entitled "Second Helpings" which is coming out April 2003. This book basically follows Jessica Darling a 16 year old girl through one year in her life. Her best friend moves away, her sister gets married, she thinks she falls in love, and so much more. I hope this book is enjoyed by many because it gives such an accurate description of one teenager's life and there is no way you can not relate to at least one part of it. Even those into their 20's and older might find this book interesting because of the perspective and the way the story is told.

Although this book doesn't have any real depth and is mostly about crushes on boys and the usual high school drama, it is better written than most romance novels targeted toward adults. The journal format of the book was effective because it sets up a ready-made structure for the tale, but it is not in your face about being a diary, which could be trite. The main character, Jessica, deals maturely with her problems and is a good role model for teens. She is just about the only 3-D character in the book, however, except for perhaps one unusual love interest, purely because he is bizarre. Her parents are not believeable at all and seem to only be vehicles for young girls who hate their parents for making rules to read about another girl's parents who are even more cruel. All in all, although I haven't picked up a YA book in quite a few years, it was a fun glimpse into the fictional mind of today's youth, where having a "cellie" and IMing is the norm, not like when I was a kid and you were cool if you had a word processor. ;) I would recommend it to young teens. I'll be releasing this to a fellow nervouser for a fave book RR.

I reallyreallyreallyreally liked this! I'd heard of SLOPPY FIRSTS and read good reveiws, but had never gotten my hands on it till now. I'm in love with this author. Since it's only been three years since I was sixteen, it's not hard to remember what it was like....and this book totally tells the truth :)

received this book as part of a nervousness.org rr. I'm glad that I felt obligated to read this book because it's not something I would have chosen on my own and I did really enjoy it. I remember being a teenager and I guess I was just as moody and silly as the main character in this book. I'm thinking of buying a copy for my 17 year old neice I think she would relate. I will send this copy to the next person in the rr.
