Tatiana is eighteen and pregnant when she escapes war-torn Leningrad to America. She believes herself a widow, for her husband, Major Alexander Belov, has been arrested by Stalin's secret police and awaits execution as a traitor and spy.

While Tatiana finds work, friends and a new life beyond her dreams in wartime New York City, she cannot escape her grief. In Russia, her husband faces the greatest danger he's ever known. For Alexander, an American who has been serving in the Red Army and impersonating a Soviet citizen, Russia's war is not over - both victory and defeat will mean certain death.
