Britain during the Roman occupation at the transition from the rule of Trajan to that of Hadrian--that's the setting for Medicus by Ruth Downie. This story is interesting, quick paced, funny. A talented Roman doctor takes an assignment at the farthest reaches of the empire only to find himself set to solve a series of murders of young local Celtic women. Aside from murder, there's the mystery of women themselves, the mystery of hospital politics, and the mystery of where to find a good cook in Britain. Gaius Petreius Ruso, the Roman medicus from Southern Gaul (France), has his much to accomplish and all while learning to like his new home in the outpost at Deva (Chester).
