This book was a bit bizarre, depressing and at times, grizzly.

****SPOILER*******

I can't say that I liked it, I certainly didn't enjoy it but in the end, I'm glad I read it. It's the story of a man and his son wandering the US in a post-apocalyptic world. We never find out what happened, but whatever it was, it was hot and fast. They try to head south seeking warmth as the earth is direly cold and dark. Along the way there is an awful lot of repetition - being cold, wrapping themselves in filthy, thin, blankets, making small fires that don't warm them enough and raiding houses and finding small cans of food which they share. At the same time, there is a feeling of impending doom, as the father continues to cough up blood, getting thinner and thinner and weaker by the day. He has to protect them from maurauders, theifs, and the "Bad Guys" who want to kill them and roast them up for supper... All through the book, there is a closeness with the son which is truly touching. There is very little conversation between them and the word Okay is repeated at least 5 times in each bit of dialog - but McCormic pulls it off and makes it believable and endearing.

The bits that I didn't like: the apostrophes or lack of them -- didnt, wouldnt, hasnt - all without apostrophes. it's, I'd -- those words had apostrophes. There were lots of incomplete sentences and choppy paragraphs.

Why I still gave it a 9: this book makes you think about what's important in life, about what you would do in a case like this. Would life be worth living? Would it be worth struggling to stay alive? Or would it be better to end it all (as the guy's wife did)? As the current news continues to talk about scorching summers, severe draughts, and nuclear proliferation -- it truly makes you think. A memorable read.
