This book is like a "bible" to me. I absolutely love it - which may seem very odd since it is such a pain-ridden, dark autobiography of a teenage drug addict.

Christiane Vera Felscherinow, branded by youth with a loveless, violent
father, difficulties in her home situation, and eventually the divorce of her parents, at the age of twelve starts experimenting with various drugs, such as hashish, numerous pills and LSD.

The consequence of her self-destructive behaviour, is that at the age of fourteen, she's an experienced heroin addict residing at the infamous Zoo station in Berlin. To support her drug addiction, she prostitutes herself to lonely losers, nutty old men and camera toting pedophiles.

The book "Christiane F." is a biography, written down by two journalists from the news magazine Stern, Kai Herrmann and Horst Rieck in the late 70s. It is based on interview recordings with Christiane F.

The book is written in the first person, enabling the reader to closely bond with her. That had the effect that I lived alongside her. I loved the people she loved, I hated the people she hated, and I was sad when another one of her friends died to an overdose. I think that's definetely a positive aspect of the book, the way it is written to make the reader strongly identify with the main character.

The book also contains photographs and interview passages from people who knew her during her addiction, such as her mother, youth workers or a police detective.

In my opinion, many of Christiane's thoughts and ideas about the world she lives in and the people she meets along the way contain a lot of truth. One must bear in mind that the book was written by journalists who had the ability to express strong views adequately, for example on sexism. Her racist attitude also becomes quite apparent, but it shows growth of character when she realizes certain misconceptions later on and makes different experiences with other nationalities.
Make up your own mind and start a discussion. There are plenty of different aspects to focus on :)
