I had never heard of Jonathan Coe before and picked up the book on offer at Waterstone's. When I bought it I didn't realise it was the sequence to "The Rotter's Club", which I haven't read. It took me a while to get into the book and understand all the characters but then I noticed that there is a very detailed summary of "The Rotter's Club" at the back of the book! That really helped even though the whole plot remains fairly complicated. "The Closed Circle" has a nice storyline with some surprising twists, I enjoyed it even though I wouldn't call the book one of my reading highlights. But it's certainly ok and worth giving it a try.
