BOOK DESCRIPTION:

"All her life, Barbara had trained to be a 10 on the Total Woman scale. But she was a lot more woman than the sum of her parts.

- True, she'd been a boy-crazed sorority sister '62.

- True, she'd married Mr. Right and settled for silken security in midwestern suburbia.

And she would have gone right on if Mr. Right hadn't gone wrong. If he hadn't taken her with him, then abandoned her in New York, The Big Apple, The Naked City.

Plunged into Total Confusion, Barbara didn't know what she wanted, so she took what she could get: firsthand lessons in Life and Love that led to an amazing discovery: She had an enormous appetite for both -- and a remarkable talent for separating the men from the boys." (Description from back cover)

Gad, what a horrible description! So totally '80's! And this is such a cool book! Basically, Barbara is married to an ambitious go-getter in Chicago. When he takes a strategic position in New York, she has to go along. Unfortunately, the husband gets cold feet and it turns out he's been having an affair -- and misses the girlfriend! Off he goes back to Chicago, leaving Barbara to fend for herself. And she does, quite nicely. Gets out from under the husband's shadow, makes her own friends, has a good time, and gets a boyfriend, too. There is a happy ending after all, and Barbara is happy to experience it.

Barbara is about 5 years old than I am, and this book was written in 1981, so I appreciated it when it came out some 25 years ago. If younger readers keep in mind that this is a book from the 1980's, they should have no problem. This is a timeless situation: overambitious husband, abandonment, coping.

I have another hardback copy of this book. I ordered this specially for a nice lady in England, Londonlife, to whom I'm going to send this in the next couple of days. Hope she enjoys it, and passes it to someone else later.

Journal Entry 3 by Londonlife from -- Somewhere in London 🤷‍♀️ , Greater London United Kingdom on Saturday, April 14, 2007
This was sent to me by Germanophile in response to a thread I started on books set in New York and I will journal it as soon as I've read it.

I found this very readable but have to confess I prefer Peck's children's books. He's a good writer though, observant and witty, and I will read more of his books if any come my way. Wild Released somewhere in London today.
