Ho hum, well it's simply one of the greatest books ever written, with the greatest first line ever, and almost every aspect of human nature told of in perfect prose, sometimes prosaic, sometimes unearthly and fantastic. If you haven't read it then I envy you - reading 'Rebecca' for the first time is one of life's major joys.

Hoorah!

Am reading "My Cousin Rachel" with my College Book Group soon so very glad to have this to read as a contrast / companion piece.

I loved the Hitchcock fillum but remember being very worried about how Laurence Olivier kept his trilby on while zooming along a cliff top road in an open topped car.

Wildly romantic but also very much a period piece.

Max de Winter is supposedly the rugged and mysterious hero but I thought he was a selfish bully.

The girl is also ridiculously feeble and pathetic.

That said, it is a right rollicking read and Du maurier conveys the atmosphere of Manderley beautifully.

This edition does have a very good feminist introduction by Sally Beauman.

I'm afraid I couldn't get into this book, I gave it 200 pages and then decided to give up. I'll try again later, for now I've passed this copy along to a friend who will hopefully join bookcrossing.
