Arthur and George
7 journalers for this copy...
Arthur Conan Doyle becomes involved in a case of Victorian 'Rough Justice'. However, unlike Sherlock Holmes he does have his very Victorian prejudices, but he does not show these to George, the victim. Like most books I seem to be reading at the moment not one to enjoy, but interesting nevertheless.

What a great book. I'm not sure what I was expecting but I love a mystery and the character of George was, well, you just wanted him to win in the end. I found Arthur over-bearing, chauvinistic and immodest. All in all, they make an unlikely couple but it makes for a good book.

Thanks so much for sending me this book, darkpunkangel. I've been wanting to read this for ages. I'm really looking forward to it! Big hugs to you!
Finally moved this one from 'to be read' to 'read'!
I have mixed feelings about this book - Barnes is undoubtedly a very talented writer and the plotline is fascinating - especially considering that it was based on a true story.
However, I didn't find myself emotionally engaged by the characters - if anything both George and Arthur irritated me on occasion - one for his passiveness and the other for his bombast! The narrative also seemed to take a long time to get going - to be honest it was only that I was reading this for my book group that made me persevere!
Still... I'm glad I have had the opportunity to read this one. I'll take it along to meetup today in hopes that another bookcrosser will be interested....

Very tardy journal, picked this one up at a meetup 2 months ago.
Could not get into this book, found it a bit inane.

I love Barnes'early novels but then he went a bit uninteresting and I stopped getting excited about his writing. Apparently this one was a return to form so I'm looking forward to reading it.
Finally got round to reading this book and I loved it. It's incredibly well-crafted, full of witty paradoxes and many fantastic and clever observations on all sort of things: Victorian England, Englishness in general, racism, life and death, love and passion, etc, etc. The true story it depicts is fascinating and the characters are excellent. Julian Barnes is such a wonderful writer and this book has not disappointed me. I wish he'd write novels more often! This is the last one to date and it's 6 years old. Fortunately his official website is announcing a new one to be published this year. Something to look forward to!
I liked this book so much I could not let go of it. It went on and off the shelves to be read by a few friends over the years, but it's silly of me to stop it from travelling when there are readers waiting out there, so it's about to be released at the monthly CBD meetup. It's already a well-travelled book, time to be on the move again!
