This is apparently Orwell's first published book and is a mix of memoir, fiction, and social commentary. I found both parts interesting, initially being unemployed in Paris and then securing a job as a dishwasher (the lowest of the low) in a fancy hotel restaurant, and then after returning to London being reduced to living as a "tramp" until his promised job eventuated.

An autobiographical account of Orwell's time spent living in poverty, firstly on the breadline and working in dire conditions as a pot-washer and general dogsbody in the restautants of Paris, and then living as a tramp in London, spending a night in one workhouse or 'spike' after another. Fascinating, giving an excellent insight into how people cope in the worst of conditions, descriptive of revolting filth and squalour and yet always keeping in sight the humanity of the poor. I like Orwell's work more and more.

Wow. This is one of those rare books I'll rate a 10! :)

You know, I had always heard about the 'poor house' and had some weird fear of being homeless and living under a bridge. So I had more than idle curiosity about this book, especially since it's auto biographical.

Not only that, but he has a engaging writing style that has a harried feel that goes with the main characters desperation in the book. I was also interested to see what kind of jobs were available and what they were like. It sounds like a true nightmare with no real way out. Indeed, it was like living like rats.

It's enough to make you shudder. I'm pretty poor myself, but at least I'm doing better than that. :P
