'Devon 1912. Tim Wilson has landed the job of his dreams as a newspaper reporter on the Torquay Times. He is also captivated by Katherine Coates, the daughter of a business colleague of his late father. Romance blossoms, but Katherine's mother Ruth has her sights set much higher for her daughter's happiness: Tim is neither rich nor well connected, and Ruth whisks Katherine off to the London scene to meet a suitable husband.

Meanwhile actress Elyse Davenport has arrived from London, bringing a welcome touch of glamour to the English Riviera. Tim realises that an interview with her would be a scoop for the paper. Elyse, however, has a lot more to offer Tim than just a newspaper exclusive. She is as attractive as he is impressionable, as experienced as he is young.
