I loved this book about Jessica Darling and her coming of age high school stories. I wasn't part of the UC "upper crust" in high school but it reminded me of true life and how segregated a high school can be. I can't wait to read the second book in the series!!

I'm taking an idea of tania-in-nc's and keeping a record of daily quotations as I read this book. I choose a quotation from the page where I stop reading each day, looking for insight, humor, strong imagery, or just a catchy turn of phrase.

"This is my new hobby. I watch my life depart minute by minute. I anticipate the end of everything and anything - a conversation, a class, track practice, darkness - only to be left with more clock-watching to take its place. I'm continually waiting for something better that never comes. Maybe it would help if I knew what I wanted."

“We got there around midnight. The fiesta was clearly in its early stages, as there was an even one-to-one ration of people to beer cans scattered on the sand. Plus, the sexes had yet to mingle. Giggly girls clung in clumps, clutching plastic cups and beer cans kindly provided by members of the opposite sex who wanted to get in their pants. Packs of guys pounded each other in the arm, pointing out the girls whose pants they wanted to get into. We may be in high school, but until everyone is wasted these shindigs are as boy-girl segregated as a kindergarten birthday party. When the sexes interface, that’s when you know things are getting really messy.”

Funnier and wiser than the standard "chicklit" for teens. Ultra-smart, driven, and hyper-observant, NJ high school student Jessica Darling has erected walls to keep the world out, and her feelings trapped inside. The hilarity of McCafferty's writing contrasts with the pain Jessica feels at being separated from Hope, the only person who truly understands her. McCafferty nails the banality of high school existence, the self absorption of teenagers, and the unexpected moments of joy that make the whole adolescent experience worthwhile.

This book is off to meet a new reader soon. Thanks for the chance to read it.
