This is an abridged (by the author) audiobook of Icebound (previously titled Prison of Ice).

I enjoyed this book, once it got going. The beginning sequence of news articles bored me to death (even though I understand they were important to setting up the story). And during the first tape I nearly turned it off and gave up on it three different times. I also found it difficult to keep track of some of the characters because there are many and I didn't have a paper copy of the book I could flip back to in order to refresh my memory.

But I'm glad I stuck with it in the end. I really came to love many of the characters and was very emotionally invested in their struggle. I got to the point where I was screaming to the tape in my car, urging the characters on and worrying that they'd all die! (I presume people watching me from other cars must have thought I was insane, but it's a good book and I enjoyed the experience)

The plot is pretty simple. A team of scientists in Antarctica get stranded there with no hope of rescue. But they don't know about a Russian sub in the area with a captain determined to prove himself and save some lives. The characters are all great, and I came to really love quite a few of them. (Even though I still think it's insane that someone with a fear of ice and snow would willingly go to Antarctica!). And though the plot is simple, lots of details and complications make it feel very real, very dire, and very exciting! I was completely freaked out when one person died in a way that scares me more than anything else in the world. But otherwise, I really liked it!

I haven't read much of Koontz, but I hear that this is an earlier work and different from most of his. All I know is that I really enjoyed it :-)

This was a very enjoyable book, as are all of Koontz's books. This one differed in that there were no "supernatural" elements It was a suspense thriller versus Sci FI.
I highl recommend this book

Eh, I think I'm not a Dean Koontz fan. I agree that there were an awful lot of characters to keep track of, but it just never really gripped me.

Thanks for sharing though. I'm planning to put this in another audio bookbox that is headed my way.
