Ruby Lennox was concieved grudgingly by Bunty and born while her father, George, was in the Dog and Hare in Doncaster telling a woman in an emerald dress and a D-cup that he wasn't married. Bunty had never wanted to marry George, but he was all that was left. She really wanted to be Vivien Leigh or Celia Johnson, swept off to America by a romantic hero. But here she was, stuck in a flat above the pet shop in an ancient street beneath York Minster, with sensible and sardonic Patricia aged five, greedy cross-patch Gillian who refused to be ignored, and Ruby...

Ruby tells the story of the family, from the day at the end of the nineteenth century when a travelling Frech photographer catches frail beautiful Alice and her children, like flowers in amber, to the startling, witty, and memorable events of Ruby's own life.

Picked up at the Coventry meet. Gave my copy away at the Uncon because I thought I would never read it. Have since been persuaded, so it was nice to find this copy.

Why did I think I would not read this book? Why haven't I read it before? It is a brilliant book and kept me riveted.

The story is excellent, and I loved the way the author moved backwards in time to fill in the story little by little. It didn't confuse me at all, and neither did the multitude of characters. Atkinson's writing style is unique; it did become a little less jokey towards the end, but that was in keeping with the subject matter.

Highly recommended.

I picked this book up from the Kitchen Garden Cafe last week after popping in for a drink and to use the baby changing facilities. But my daughter fell asleep before I'd bought my drink so I sat down and starting thinking I really needed something to read. I was even ferreting through my handbag trying to find a receipt or something. I then noticed I was sat next a book shelf with these Book Crossing Books on and got stuck right in. I was a bit weary at first about taking it home but realised that it was encouraged.

I had read the Jackson Brodie series from Kate Atkinson and really enjoyed those as I love reading crime novels, but I could tell this was a little out of my comfort zone. I reluctantly started reading and found I really enjoyed how cleverly it had been written. I still haven't finished it yet (busy new mother and all) and I've even let myself get a fine after getting about the library books I borrowed.

As soon as I finished I shall pass the book on, but need to think of somewhere where it will be appreciated....so what this space.

WILD RELEASE NOTES:

It was a great book and very different from what I normally read.

As this was my first release I wanted to get a few miles on the books clock. So I asked my brother to release it for me in the village where I grew up. The Lower George is a lovely cafe with massive cakes and great fair trade coffee!

I wonder who will pick this book up next and where it will go in the future? I'm hooked!
