Synopsis
The oldest love story never told...Her name is Dinah. In the Bible her fate is merely hinted at in a brief and violent detour within the verses of the Book of Genesis that recount the life of Jacob and his infamous dozen sons. The Red Tent is an extraordinary and engrossing tale of ancient womanhood and family honour. Told in Dinah's voice, it opens with the story of her mothers - the four wives of Jacob - each of whom embodies unique feminine traits, and concludes with Dinah's own startling and unforgettable story of betrayal, grief and love. Deeply affecting and intimate, The Red Tent combines outstandingly rich storytelling with an original insight into women's society in a fascinating period of early history and such is its warmth and candour, it is guaranteed to win the hearts and minds of women across the world.

When the book is described as "extraordianry and engrossing" in its backcover I always tend to be little cynical. In this case it is absolutely true. This is the story of Dinah who is only briefly mentioned in the Bible. Her (and her mothers' story too) is gripping and sad, but there's light and hope too.And I was fascinated by the detailed and colourful way of life Anita Diamant describes.

I am giving this to a fellow bookcrosser, I hope she'll like it. Have a merry Christmast!

I finally started reading this book, thanks to Tarna's Mt. TBR Challenge (http://www.bookcrossing.com/forum/30/6202522 - only in Finnish, sorry!). I wasn't expecting much because I'm not religious and don't know the Bible very well. Anyway I ended up liking this book a lot, although I think it would have been even more enjoyable if I was more familiar with the Bible. I do remember some of the stories vaguely from my childhood, like the story of Esau and Jacob, but many times while reading this book I found myself thinking "I'd like to know how this is told in the Bible".

An interesting and well-written book, definitely worth a read. Thanks to aava once again for giving me excellent reading!

(Unfortunately the book is not in a very good shape - the cover is loose as well as some pages. I'll try to fix it and make it to stay in one piece for a little longer still. It's such a good book that I hope it'll get some more readers before its time to go to the book cemetery.)

The Death of Books has taken this tome to it's tomb, in hope that it will find a final resting place on a comfortable shelf in the great sky-libary
