Yet another book from a long ago literature class. I have to confess that I don't remember this one but I've always liked the cover art. The back cover tells me it's a "brilliant novel [about] the daily life of an English family in the Hebrides."

As I recall this is one of the books that I studied in my semester in London and the instructor was engaged (after having five children together) to Woolf's nephew. I was never sure whether the instructor was marrying the chap because they'd been together so long and had so many children together or because he was related to Virginia Woolf--a writer the instructor idolized. I remember the instructor as a highly entertaining woman who would make the most outrageous statements. She actually told us that she'd taken up with her fiance in the first place because he was related to Virginia Woolf.

Sending this one off to Nu-knees as a RABCK.

Thank you, BigKat. What a lovely surprise! I've never had a RABCK before, so that makes this one extra, extra special.

I've read some Virginia Woolf in the past but not this one so I look forward to increasing my knowledge of classic English Literature.

Like you, I'm impressed with the cover art. I would love to visit the Hebrides. The nearest I've been so far is the northern coast of Scotland but we didn't cross over onto any of the islands. Maybe one day ....

Finally got round to reading and enjoying this! For a time I thought I might save it to be the W of my alphabet challenge but it was taking too long to get there - some of early books are quite thick and I'm still only on L!

Somehow this is a very gentle book, not one to set the world on fire, but a very pleasant read with a beautifully poetic use of language.

I think it's important to be familiar with a wide range of the Classics, so thank you again, BigKat, for filling in one of the gaps in my knowledge of Virginia Woolf.

Will think carefully about where to send it next ....

I took the book from the meetup pile last night in York and thought that to read some literature would do me good...
