The year is 1937, the place is a small tobacco-farming community in eastern North Carolina. The narrator is the shy but restless Roxy Walston, a young mother and wife of a farmer whose tobacco means more to him than his family. When a handsome stranger comes to town, a classic story unfolds. Only this time, the story is told with the woman as the "mysterious center."
