I am embarrassed to admit that I enjoyed this book as much as I did. I made it my “only-at-the-gym” book, which means that I read the entire thing while pedaling away on stationary bikes and walking on the treadmill – and I must say that it certainly was motivational, if nothing else! I have been to the gym every morning for two weeks, just so that I could see what happens to Jemima. And let me just say, it is difficult to wimp out on exercise and have a “light” day when Jemima is working so hard and the fat is melting off!

Despite my enjoyment, however, I must say that I’m somewhat disappointed by the stereotypes that the author subscribed to. Namely with Jemima herself - she seemed like a skinny woman’s interpretation of what it is like to be fat. To assert that fat women just eat and eat all day, constantly stuffing their faces with things like bacon sandwiches and pastries is absurd. Jemima made a comment much like “The next thing you know, she’ll be saying she has some sort of gland problem. Fat people are fat because they eat too much. Period.” Honestly, I found it offensive. To me, Jemima’s attitude throughout was just a horrible misunderstanding of what it is like to be fat.

Even so, I could readily identify with the insecurities that plagued her. The feeling of so much excitement because someone likes you – despite what you may think of that person – is not foreign to me. Nor is the feeling of unworthiness because you are fat. Still, I was surprised that she would allow herself to be treated as she was – ESPECIALLY given her newfound glamour! Shame on you, Jemima.

In the end, despite my annoyance at the author for her weaknesses, I did think that it was a thoroughly entertaining read – with a feel-good, fantasy ending that could be predicted by page 1. Of course, the prospect of such a fluffy, feel-good read is why I chose to read this book in the first place – I wasn’t disappointed!

Waiting for the next person's address. As soon as I get it, I'll get this sent off - hopefully early in this coming week!

Caught today.

Jemima Jones is overweight. About 100 pounds overweight. Treated like a maid by her thin and social-climbing roommates, and lorded over by the beautiful Geraldine at Kilburn Hearald, Jemima finds that her only consolation is food. Add to this her passion for her charming, sexy and unobtainable collegue Ben, and Jemima knows her life is in need of a serious change. When she meets Brad, and eligible California hunk, over the internet, she has the perfect opportunity to reinvent herself-as JJ, the slim, beautiful, gym-obsessed glamour girl. But when her long distance Romeo demands that they meet, she must conquer her food addiction and become the bone-thin model of her emails, no small feat.

This was my 2nd book by Green and I loved it!! I was a little upset with JJ at one point in the book, but grew to love her again at the end.

10/19-mailed via media mail.
